Today’s technology is developing blazing fast. We are connected to the world and have a diverse list of Instant Messaging apps and a somewhat open ecosystem called Matrix.

Though it brings many advantages to out lives, there’s always some downsides. The first and foremost thing is it occupies our lives. IM Networks brings people closer than ever before. People are developing addiction to their phones, doom scrolling IM apps in universities, markets, canteens, you name it. As part of the consequences, the majority of us always expect a fast reply from their friends / co-workers even in off hours. It takes the time away from one’s hobbies and worsens over time. This is what I call an intrusion to our time.

The intrusion isn’t really the worst when it decreases one’s ability to read/write long paragraphs. We used to communicate using E-Mails formally, taking thoughts about what to write down and what to omit. And by reading a carefully crafted mail, we take the comprehension skills in use and continuously develop it in the process. But the adoption of instant messaging changed that forever: Instead of thinking before typing, we instead type what’s in our mind at that moment. Also, we often lose the ability to focus ourselves on a long article and being impatient about reading. Those changes significantly decreases the efficiency of chatting. Often leads to confusion and useless conversations spamming all over the place, making information searching much more difficult. Ultimately, I just translated X-Y problem and How To Ask Questions The Smart Way to remind myself and others about how we are supposed to speak and comprehence on the Internet. This is just like the spreading of short videos destroying out patience.

While chatting, you should know that there’s certainly a chance that the platform you live on may steal your chatting history to train AI models. And there’s other problems preserving your chat history. Don’t expect your moments be kept forever as the platform may shutdown without any prior sign.

In conclusion, IM brings many advancements to our lives with consequences bundled in. Do keep yourselves from the IM at a comfortable distance and increase the usage of forms that require writing and comprehension. And you have just read all of my rants ;). Have a nice day!
